LIMP - Lab of Magneto-fluid-dynamics and Plasmas

Research activities

In the LIMP laboratory, industrial applications of plasmas are studied. The main research fields are:

  • The magneto-fluid-dynamic interaction in hypersonic flight.
  • The magneto-fluid-dynamic electrical power generation.
  • The electro-hydro-dynamic interaction generated by a dielectric barrier discharge DBD.
  • The plasma generators at high frequencies and high electrical tensions.
  • Treatment of gaseous pollutants by means of DBD..

Teaching activities

In the LIMP laboratory practice related to the Engineering of Plasmas Lecture are held. Low pressure discharges in argon or air atmospheres are analyzed. Electro-fuid-dynamics actuator based on the dielectric barrier discharge are tested too. The tests carried out by students are also directed to the plasma diagnostics. The LIMP Lab is a lab of the PhD Course of Electrotechnical Engineering. In it several PhD thesis had been developed.


The LIMP has

  • A vacuum chamber used for the testing of electrical discharges in low pressure atmospheres.
  • A wind tunnel to test the effect of the fluid-dynamic plasma actuators.
  • A monochromator coupled to a CCD camera to evaluate the emission spectrum of the plasma.
  • A Schlieren system.
  • A CCD high speed camera.
  • A micro-wave diagnostic system.
