SOLARTRONIC-Lab - Laboratory of Fotovoltaic energy conversion and Power electronic circuits

The SOLARTRONIC-Lab includes a research laboratory of about 25 m2 at ground floor (rooms 31-33), an office with 4 work stations for master/PhD students (room 32), a solar terrace with different PV modules with the possibility to change their arrangement.

Research activities

The research activities at the SOLARTRONIC-Lab are generally realated to the photovoltaic energy production and conversion by power electronic converters, with particular reference to:

  • Low-concentration photovoltaics.
  • Electric characterization of solar cells, PV module, and PV fields.
  • Sun radiation simulators with LED and hybrid technologies.
  • Maximum power point tracking algorithms (MPPT).
  • Dc/dc and dc/ac converters for stand-alone and grid-connected PV systems.
  • Multiphase and multilevel dc/ac converters.
  • New conversion topologies for switching and resonant converters.
  • High power dc/dc choppers for fast charge of EV batteries.

Teaching activities

Official univeristy subjects (courses) within the SOLARTRONIC-Lab:
- Circuiti Elettrici T (9 ECTS)
- Conversione fotovoltaica dell'energia M (3 ECTS)
- Power electronic circuits M (6 ECTS)
- Circuit modeling for energy storage and photovoltaics M (3 ECTS).

Equipments

1 high-performance digital oscilloscope "Yokogawa", 3 digital oscilloscopes "Rigol", voltage and current transducers and probes, analog and digital multimeters, solarmeter, pyranometer, solar spectrum analyzer, 1 board for automatic evaluation of I-V and P-V characteristics of PV modules, different types of PV modules, PV modules with integrated energy storage, ultra-thin lithium batteries, single- and three-phase variacs and isolation transformers, 1 three-phase ac power supply with variable voltage and frequency, 6 dc power supplies, 6 single-phase power inverter boards, 4 three-phase power inverter boards, 1 three-phase resonant dc/dc converter, many DSP (T.I.) and Arduino evaluation boards.
